About My Drum Loops
To produce the best drum loop possible I prefer to edit my drum loops manually rather than using time stretching or quantizing software. There are several reasons for this.
Even the best time stretching algorithms leave some noticeable artifacts. By editing my drum loops manually most of the recording can be kept in its original state. Except for a few milliseconds of cross fading here and there, the original audio quality is preserved 100%. This avoids any phasing or pitch changing issues.
Time stretching software can sound satisfactory if used sparingly. Once time stretching is applied to an audio file it often can't be stretched again without noticeable audio degradation. If you use your software to change the tempo of my drum loops you can expect the same results as if it has been stretched for the first time.
Some beats sound best when quantized and some sound better when the "human drummer feel" is preserved and sometimes a little of both. Manual editing lets me decide what sounds best. I sometimes find myself making that decision on the thirty second note level, but I often find that I only need to make sure that the first beat in the drum loop falls exactly where it should be and that the end of the loop fills the full tempo, this usually only takes a few milliseconds one way or another but ensures that the loop fits the tempo that is says it is. When one of my loops says that it 120 BPM it is exactly 120 BPM.
I strive to create the best quality acoustic drum loops possible, finding a balance between the smallest detail and overall human feel. When editing, I always rely on my ear - not automatic software.
